The founder of Din Tai Fung was Bingyi Yang, born 1927 in China’s Shanxi Province. Truly a success story, he has many restaurants in Asia and Australia and has opened five locations in the US. Arcadia, Glendale, two in the Seattle area, and recently in Costa Mesa at South Coast Plaza. The restaurant gets very crowded but worth the wait. I sat at the bar and dined away.
All the food looks and smells divine. It is also fun to watch the masters at work, making thousands of dumplings daily.
The staff was very friendly and was really helpful when I was trying to make my selection. I think it would be really fun to go with a group so you can sample a lot of different items. Next time I want to try:
Green Melon and Shrimp Dumplings, Shrimp & Pork Shao Mai, Sauteed String Bean w/ Garlic, Braised Beef Noodle Soup, Shrimp & Pork Wonton Soup.
Dealing with South Coast Plaza can be a pain but let's face it, when the food is really fantastic, it is worth the hassle.
