A new OC Wino favorite: Settebello

8/20/2014

Our curiosity about this new pizza place in Crystal Cove got the better of us after a long day slaving over the computer. For your entertainment... Much to our surprise, we hit a winner. Settebello is a beautiful new restaurant that opened in Crystal Cove just three weeks ago.

We were greater by our darling waiter Jordan, who had many delectable suggestions to try on their menu. We needed wine after our day, and decided on some Gainey Chardonnay, which lacked a little volume on the pour. But when they get to know me, it should get better!

We started off with a delicious Romana salad and Duck Confit Crostini, which both put smiles on our faces. We were planning to save the third crostini for Trent, but it was too good not to eat. The bacon wrapped dates were to die for and we wanted to try Jordan's recommendation of the Crispy Polenta Bites, but we had already ordered two pizzas and didn't want to seem too gluttonous.

Romana salad with arugula, artichoke, pine nuts, goat cheese, lemon vinaigrette, balsamic reduction, and prosciutto... this was amazing and we saved some to top our pizza
Next, we switched to a merlot for the arrival of Settebello's specialty pizzas.
The Diavolo was a tomato based pizza with spicy salami and roasted red peppers. Of course I added more pepper flakes to make it even spicier, while Shelby kept downing her wine to keep the fire down.
The Bianca was a different version than I'm used to. They add prosciutto and arugula to the mix. This was great with the arugula salad added on top. The crust was really good and almost sweet too.

Jordan is both a waiter and a pizza maker. He actually created the recipe for our dessert pizza, which was to die for.

I have to say, this place gives Mozza a run for its money! At the restaurant, I ran into my friend Elizabeth, who I do Bar Method with. We compared notes in class and decided that we both gave it a big thumbs up and will be returning soon to sample more pizzas!
Settebello Pizzaria Napoletana is located in Crystal Cove across from Javiers at 7864 East Coast Highway, Newport Beach
Open for dinner every day and for lunch on weekends
The restaurant also has locations in Marina Del Rey, Oxnard, and Pasadena, as well as a few in Utah and Nevada

OCWino goes to the OC Fair!

Every year I look forward to going to the OC Fair. For the rides? Are you kidding me? No thank you.
I'm strictly all about the fare at the fair.
After getting jacked by buying a used ticket off of someone leaving the fair, we were ready to hit the wine bar!
As usual, it was super crowded and hot. Luckily, my brother had saved us a great table in the shade, so we were ready to start sampling!
A few blurry hours later, the kids arrived with their selection of the best fair foods. Every year I leave it up to them to pick their favorite greasy treats.
Here we go...
Fried doritos... why do they need to be fried twice? So disgusting
Jack Daniels Churro with whipped cream. By far my favorite choice!
Corn on the cob is always killer
Bacon wrapped deep fried turkey leg. Wow this a little much. It probably had a pound of bacon wrapped around it
McCall digging in!
The carcass post-meal
The Food Critics
Both tables devoured everything... Fried snicker bars, fried klondike bars, fried butter... why is all fair food fried???
Happy, full, and ready for a cholesterol test
The rides scare the crap out of me, but I don't mind checking out the fantastic lights. Trust me, I know who puts those rides together...
Next event at the fair: Demolition Derby tonight with my Trucker girlfriends!!
Stay tuned, more fair food to follow!

Cristina's Restaurant in Ketchum

The most delicious lunch eatery in Sun Valley is Cristina's Restaurant. I was so torn about getting the linguini with creamy mushroom sauce, but felt I didn't need the carbs. So we opted for the heirloom tomato and burrata salad and the asian chicken salad. We decided to splurge our extra calories we saved on a bottle of chilled cougar crack.

Massive Pour at Sol Restaurant

Lunching with my friend Miss Pearl on manic Monday, we decided to drop into Sol in Newport Beach for a salad and a pour. They serve their pours in 3 oz (which is just a waste of time), 9 oz, and bottles. We opted for the 9 oz to accompany our tortilla soup and mixed greens salads. Eric was our waiter and brought us tastings of different wines.
Miss Pearl had a pinot, while I had the Lincourt Chardonnay. It was an amazingly hefty pour.

Rockin' out with The Sarcastics

One Thursday a month, it's so much fun to go to the Back Bay Tavern behind Whole Foods to see the band, The Sarcastics. Matt Marshall, Matt Magiera, Gary Grainger, and Brett Grainger keep the crowd rockin'. They have a following, both old and new, enjoying the music. It appeals to both my generation and those young millennials.

Back Bay Tavern offers a full menu of delicious food and great small plates. Check out their wine pour. This nice glass of Rombauer Chardonnay is $13. Can't beat the price with entertainment in tow. They usually play from 6:30-9. It is a great way to start off your Thursday night!

Two of my Favorite Pours: Pahlmeyer and Goldeneye

Picture
Pahlmeyer is one of my new favorite chardonnays. It is a little less heavy than the cougar crack Rombauer.
I'm not a big fan of Pinot Noirs since they tend to be a little chalky in flavor and finish.
However Goldeneye is smooth, full bodied, yet light.
These are my two picks of the month.

Old Pours Out, New Pours In: A Pour at The Winery

I think most of us locals were sad to say goodbye to The Villa Nova. Our friend Charlie Dale and his family had the restaurant for many years. I think most of us from Newport grew up at this local joint.

The Winery, which originally opened in Tustin, just opened their second location in The Villa Nova's old location. They did an extensive remodel, and have turned it into quite the fancy joint. As you can well imagine, The Winery has been very controversial within both the old and new Newport scene. I definitely had my reservations when I stepped foot in the bar.

Picture
The bar scene was a sausage fest. Why is it that all the men sit around the bar, and all the ladies sit at tables? It harkened back to the days of middle school dances.
Picture
My friend, OC local Bob McDonald, bought me a delicious glass of Kistler Chardonnay. For a delicious $26 glass, the pour sustained me throughout the hour. The pour in the photo looks small, but I'm pretty sure I took a couple sips before I remembered I needed to take a photo.

The wine list is extensive and I would definitely have another pour here. Go with a coed group and it might be fun.
